New England hotels bring home the gold
Five Boston hotels stand among the best of the best in the country, according to an annual ranking by U.S. News & World Report. These hotels were awarded a Gold badge for appearing in the top 10 percent of the 2018 Best Hotels in the USA list. For eight years, U.S. News & World Report has been pointing travelers in the right direction with annual rankings of high-end hotels.

The party’s over: University takes disciplinary action against two popular fraternities
On any given Friday night, hundreds of University of Massachusetts students crowd into the backyards and basements of Theta Chi and Phi Sigma Kappa, and many others mill around the yard behind the fraternities, waiting to get in. Bass beats bump and the crowd buzzes. The fraternities are a draw for first-year students, in part because they are easy to get to; the houses are located at the edge of campus, across from the Studio Arts Building on North Pleasant Street, an easy walk from the dorms.

How prescription opioids helped fuel the Massachusetts heroin epidemic
Rob Lelacheur of Milford was prescribed OxyContin in the 12th grade after breaking his ankle. He had no idea at the time that this would mark the beginning of a long-term battle with opioid addiction that nearly took his life. When the prescription was cut off, he began to go through withdrawal. Seeking relief, he turned to a friend who bought him loose prescription pills from the streets.
Camp-in helps raise money for Cancer Connection
Radio personality Monte Belmonte broadcasted for 12 hours in a tuxedo and top hat in the Hotel Northampton ballroom on Wednesday, gathering donations for Cancer Connection. The 17-year-old local nonprofit provides free support services to cancer patients and their families. Last year, WRSI morning show host Belmonte helped raise $100,000 for the nonprofit.

Whether or not he will ever return to Amherst — to his work, his friends, his car, his home — remains uncertain. Cummington pair look to pioneer nut farming in western Mass.
When Sara Tower began farming about eight years ago, she worked mostly with vegetables, which is typical of many farmers in the area. Next fall, though, she and her partner will harvest a crop that is new to western Massachusetts — nuts. Last year, Tower and Kalyan Uprichard, co-owners of Nutwood Farm in Cummington, planted 350 nut trees on their 8-acre farm.

I am a junior journalism student at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Currently, I am working at the Boston Globe as a co-op for the Magazine, Travel and Address sections.

Last semester, I was promoted from managing editor to co-editor-in-chief of Amherst Wire, the award-winning, student-produced online publication of the UMass Journalism Department.

I have worked as a freelance reporter at the Daily Hampshire Gazette. This summer, I was an editorial intern at Design New England magazine, the bi-monthly home and gardens magazine that is part of Boston Globe Media. I have also completed internships at the Daily Hampshire Gazette, the Worcester Telegram and Gazette, and Worcester Magazine.
